Tierra-Estella

In this land, many artistic samples are found due to its history the Way of St James or Camino de Santiago crossed this land. There are several monasteries and Romanesque hermitages. Its nature is whimsical and irregular, showing an exuberant vegetation.

It is possible to walk through beech woods (Atlantic climate) or hom-oak woods (Mediterranean climate). The highest elevations reach 1 400 m, but the difficulty for ascent and route is minimum.

Estella

Its capital, Estella, which was born from the Way of St James ( Puente la Reina - Obanos - Estella - Logroño - ) is still faithful to its portrait in the adagio 'Estella la bella' , as it was known in the 15th century. It is a Romanesque town, whose nickname is the 'Toledo from the North', due to its historical and artistic heritage.

The influence of the Way of St James and of the Jewish quarter is present in all the city. It was founded in 1090 by the king Sancho Ramírez, but it is in the 12th and 13th centuries when Estella reaches its splendor. The Palace of Kings of Navarre, which is probably the only civil Romanesque building in Navarre, dates back to this period.

Other examples of civil architecture in the city are the bridges of San Martín or Azucarero, and of the Jail, the Old Justice Palace, and the medieval door of Castilla.

In the middle of the route of the Camino de Santiago we can find the Governor Palace , a 17th century building that is part of a period of development and prosperity of the city , which currently houses the Museum of Carlism that allows us to discover through paintings, uniforms, coins and photographs one of the most important historical episodes of the 19th century in Spain.

Among its religious buildings, we find the late Romanesque Saint Peter´s Church with a magnificent cloister from the 12th century; the Saint Michael´s Churchwith a representative northern facade and a Gothic altarpiece of Santa Elena; the Holy Sepulcre´s Church with a Gothic facade from the 14th century; and the neo-Gothic Puy´s Basilic , which is located in the place where, according to the legend, the Virgin del Puy appeared. From this place, you will be able to enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the city.

The popular festivals to honour the Virgin del Puy and the Apostle St. Andrew begin the Friday preceding the first Sunday of August (Viernes de Gigantes). Celebrations last a week. Every morning there is a running of heifers through the streets. They are traditionally the women who take part in them. Celebrations continue in the streets until one o'clock in the morning. At this time, there is the dance Baile de la Era (characteristic dance from Estella) and, then, La Bajadica del Che.
